In this world heavily inspired by early middle eastern culture and lore the world is ruled by a number of sorceror kings, a sort of warlords. As stated before almost all creatures on Athas has strong mental powers in the form of psionic abilities. Magic in this world are divided into two categories: Defiler magic, which draws power from the world thereby corrupting it, and Preserver magic which does the opposite. Most metal tools and weapons are rare and expensive. The lack of metals have caused the inhabitants to make tools and weapons of materials like wood, obsidian and bone. In this process a lot of the creatures in this world have developed strong psychic powers in order to survive. Athas used to be full of life and quite fertile but the use of defiler magic and an unforgiving sun has turned the land barren.
The world of Athas, where the game plays out, is a harsh and unhospitable desert planet where resources like water and metals are few.
The game takes place in the AD&D setting of Dark Sun, a lesser known fantasy realm of the AD&D pen & paper game. The game plays out as a traditional CRPG with a custommade party of 1-4 characters. The first Dark Sun game was released in 1993 by Strategic Simulations Inc (SSI) and was based on the AD&D 2nd edition rulebook.
